Norwescon Special Events

Last week I asked for ideas for new special events. Between all the new ones suggested and the ones we already do, I have more than we could ever do. So could you rate the following special events so I have a better idea of which ones we should do for Norwescon 31.

Rate the following special events on a scale of 1 to 10.
1 being an event you would never attend
10 an event that you would go to regardless of what else was going on at the convention.

Hi Caren,

As you can tell from this poll I'm still in the process of figuring out what will be in my department next year. I think there is really really good chance we will be doing the FFS again. I know multiple execs have asked that the meeting we have each night of the convention NOT be scheduled against the FFS. We all had to leave in the middle of the FFS last year to attend the meeting, very unhappy execs....

The first meeting should be in September, once I know the date I'll let you know.

Some get to know you social events..

Food and a discussion about a topic.. Make a reservation in the restaurant for say 10 peeps.. They sign up ahead of time and talk about say buffy, or some other fan topic.

Have a place for people to meet and then they can decide where to hang. We just give people a time to get together. You could even have a getting to know you board so fans with common interest can go to panels together.

Something fun a full on apples to apples session. Find out how others think.

Speed dating event or speed friending event...

Salsa dancing! Yay! (I used to teach salsa in the U-district with Michelle Badion. I don't know that it fits Norwescon very well, but I sure like it - and could probably either teach a beginning class or help you find someone if that's something that you decide to do.)

Not to utterly snark about it- but could posts of such a length please be placed under cut tags? I'd really prefer not to cut this community from my f-list, but if this is how it continues, then I'll have to pull it, just to keep things in readable form.

Done.

Sorry about that I didn't quite understand how the "viewable by none" worked. I was hoping that after they filled out the poll they wouldn't see the results, instead it just keeps them from viewing how an individual voted.

Once the poll was done I was just going to post the high level results.

So... uh... what were the high level results then?

Re: I didn't mean to type so much!
Well, the Match Game SF show that I've done at various conventions (including this past BayCon and last year's Worldcon) is certainly SF/F-themed. For example: "The Doctor said, 'As I travel through time and space in my TARDIS, the one thing I really hate about my companions is that they don't ________.'"

And I know we've tried to make our shows work with flash and polish. There's my report on our show at BayCon if you'd like to see what I mean. Among other things, I've gone to the effort to find the same long, skinny microphone (it's a collectible nowadays) that Gene Rayburn used in the real 1970s Match Game, and to reproduce the style of the show as best as we can within the technical limitations we have. And of course, the shows we've done at California conventions have been helped by a wonderful set of "regulars" as our panelists, and as we've done more shows, they've gotten better at getting into the spirit of the game.

But the initial response on game shows in this poll isn't very promising. They take a lot of work to organize and run well, and it's only worth doing if enough people want to come and watch (and participate) in them. Personally, I think that once people see our show they'll like it, but that getting them to see it the first time is what's difficult. That's one reason we did two shows at L.A.con IV; the early afternoon show, which was only lightly attended, was intended to get the word out about the late-night show, which was SRO.

Makes sense to me. I wasn't at the last Norwescon, so I don't know what games were in the Casino.

The IKV T'Mar has been doing the Intergalactic Interdimensional Casino at Rustycon for quite a few years, and at Radcon for the past couple of years. We have made our own games, some by modifying other games, others from raw materials or non-game items. We're primarily (but not wholly) a Klingon based club, so you'll notice that many are Star Trek based.

Klingon Blackjack - I made custom card decks with our Klingon members and friends as the face cards, and miscellaneous Klingon icons for the numbered cards. 14 cards in a suit, 5 suits in a deck just to keep things interesting. Back of the cards make them look printed on metal.

Klingon Battling Tops - One of the guys in the club made a playing field, it uses store bought plastic tops and he does the game count-down in the Klingon language.

Alien Autopsy - I made a game similar to Operation, it's about 4 foot by 1.5 feet with an Alien that screams if you fail. Strobe lights, other lighting. The dealer (usually me) dresses as a mad doctor.

Klingon in a Jefferies Tube - My wife changed a Pirate in a Barrel game into this game. I'm adding some electronics so he'll scream something rude in Klingon when he pops out.

Light Wars - a stock but very sci fi looking LED chaser game, I'm going to rebuild it into something larger as it's only about 16 inches across. The game start sound is just like the Star Trek "red alert" klaxon. The light circles around, you must hit Shield buttons to repel or capture it.

Shooting Game (better name coming) - originally a shooter game, shines a couple of slides on the wall that you must shoot. Comes with games like Duck Hunt and Fighter Attack, if I can get it working better in a lit room then I'm replacing the slides with sci fi ships and changing the sounds.

Klingon Slot Machine - 4 foot tall, lots of blinking lights, Star Trek themed graphics and sounds.

Roulette Wheel - all LED, courtesy of LED Neil. I may rebuild it to make it larger and louder and brighter.

In the works:

More themed slot machines - Other sci fi stories, and Steampunk/Girl Genius/Mad Scientist themes.

Klingon Dabo Wheel - moving parts and LEDs, similar to Quark's Dabo Wheel but flashier.

Electronic 4 Across - All LEDs, small game about 10 inches tall, to be moved into a much larger cabinet with more of a sci fi theme. And needs a better name. Andorian Checkers? ;')

Klingon Four Play - Random game of chance. Ball dropped in, has 4 different places to come out, hence name. Lights and sounds.

Radcon had me make Star Trek themed casino cash for them.

We (meaning the IKV T'Mar) are the club who did the Klingon Edition of The Weakest Link years ago at Norwescon, and at several Rustycons and Anglicon since then.

Our website is badly in need of an update, but this is us:

Dances:
I'm definitely in the vast minority but based on attending previous dances, a hot, stuffy room and obnoxiously loud bad music. I will SO pass.

Masquerade:
I've attended a some in the past. Will attend some in the future. Tends to have the hot, stuffy room problem.

Gaming Rooms:
Ok. I admit it. I'm a gamer. I like to game, what can I say. There has to be a balance between having enough space and not enough.

Casino:
um, no. What is the connection to Sci-fi or Fantasy?

Lazer Tag:
Never done Lazer Tag at Norwescon. Don't know much about it.

Fanish Fetish Fashion Show, Burlesque Workshop, Burlesque Show and Adult Toy Party:
Norwescon ≠ The Wet Spot. If that is what you want, then go there instead. There is no connection to Sci-Fi/Fantasy for any of the above. Norwescon needs to go in the direction of PG/PG-13 not R/NC-17.
No, No, No and Hell NO!

Midnight Movies:
If by this you mean The Rocky Horror Picture show then yeah I'll go. If you a showing of a first run sci-fi/fantasy movie, maybe, depends on the movie. If you mean random sci-fi/fantasy movie that everyone's seen a zillion times then isn't that what the video room/channel is for?

Chocolate auction:
Maybe but probably not. The art auction is boring enough.

Pro Wrestling:
You have got to be kidding me. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!

Robot Battles:
HELL YES! I might be willing to pay extra for that!

Video Room/Channels, Anime Videos:
Not really anything I couldn't do at home. No real compelling interest to do at a con.

Fashion Shows:
I liked it better the first time when it was called the Masquerade.

Live Radio Shows, Hypnotist, MST2K:
Sometimes they are good, but most of the time they suck rocks. It seems to work better with professionals rather than con volunteer types.

Events Poll for 2008 NorWesCon
Some of those events with acronyms I didn't even know what they were, so rated them low. A brief explanation for each event would make a more meaningful poll.
Sounds as if a lot of people are interested, which is a bit surprising to me, who really likes panels.

What about LAN gaming as opposed to console gaming?

A number of Cons in the area have had console/computer gaming and they did seem to be a fairly big draw for some individuals. I never understood why it went away, but I could see it being cost prohibitive.
